Spring 2015 Tournament Recap

16 players gathered at the Baton Rouge Bridge Club on April 25, 2015 to play in the Baton Rouge Spring Scrabble tournament. Players came from Louisiana, and the neighboring states of Texas and Mississippi to play 8 games in the one day tournament.

Fran Silver, from Texas, won the top prize, with a 6-2 record. Sarah Waits of New Orleans took second place. The winner of the second divison was Maneck Cntractor, of New Orleans. Samuel Kennedy, playing in his first Scrabble tournament, took second place in Division B.

For many players, it was their first opportunity to play with a new lexicon (OTCWL2014). Prizes were awarded for the highest played new word in each of the two divisions. Fran Silver played NANCIER for 75 points, and Sandra Grant played TIX for 57 points. The highest scoring play overall was played in Divison B, by Annette McCaffery: INQUEST for 117 points. In Division A, Carolyn Atchison played GORIEST for 96 points. Mike Waugh played the highest scoring game, earning 535 points. Baton Rouge Spring Tournament 2015

The Baton Rouge Scrabble Club will be hosting a one day 8 game tournament to be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015.

Send in entry fee of $40 and an entry form* to Mike Waugh before April 22, 2015. Late entries are $20 extra.
*Tree huggers and printer ink hoarders: You don’t necessarily need to print out the entry form for mailing with your entry fee as long as you provide the following information: name, NASPA player number, address, cell phone number and email address.
On Saturday, April 25, you must be at the tournament site for 9:30 am. Games begin at 10am.  We will be playing 8 games total. We should wrap up about 6:30pm.

How

Immediately email the tournament director, Mike Waugh (mikewaughbr [at] gmail.com), if you plan on playing in the tournament. Players and divisions will be updated on cross-tables leading up to the tournament. Typically, this tournament consists of 3 Divisions rated split at 1400 and 1000 approximately, but we reserve the option to adjust divisions depending on the number of competitors. The pairings are round robin or modified Swiss followed by king-of-the-hill. The Gibson rule will be applied when the situation arises. We will be using tsh pairing software.

Who

Must be NASPA member to participate. First time players have some options. Contact Mike Waugh if this will be your first tournament.

 

Lexicon

This tournament will be using the Official Tournament and Club Word List 2014 (OWL2014), as it takes place after the new dictionary adoption date of April 10, 2015.

Fall Scrabble Tournament

The Baton Rouge Fall Scrabble Tournament will be held on November 15-16, 2014. We will be playing 12 games over the two days.

In addition to providing competitive word-play, the Baton Rouge Scrabble Club will also be providing plenty of excellent snacks and refreshments, and hot lunch on both days. One of these lunches will feature Louisiana red beans and rice.

The highest placed Louisiana resident in Division A will be dubbed the 2014 Louisiana Scrabble Champion.

We will be playing at the Baton Rouge Bridge Club. The facility is just a block away from the tournament hotel, the Comfort Inn Suites University, (225-923-3377).

2012 Louisiana Scrabble Championship

17 players came to compete for two days in the 2012 Fall Baton Rouge Scrabble Championship. Players came from Alabama, New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana.

Eric Cahanin successfully defended his Louisiana Scrabble Championship crown, having first won the top prize last year. Wally Schultz of New Mexico took second place.
